ORIHUELA COSTA TO GET THE CARNIVAL TREATMENT

The winning poster design

As much of the world has been dressed in splashes of colour, danced to the rumba and partied day and night, it is the turn of Orihuela Costa to get into the carnival spirit.

What began last year as a collaboration between the Orihuela Costa town hall, local business group Pro Orihuela Costa Platforma and local schools, has this year exploded into a fiesta that will be the closing fiesta that adds the cherry to the top of the icing on the fruit filled fiesta that was carnival 2012.

The councillor for fiestas in Orihuela, Carolina Gracia, along with the councillor for the coast, Bob Houliston, officially presented the event this week that will take place on Saturday 25th February, starting at 6pm.

Surrounded by excited representatives from the business group and those representing parent associations, Carolina Gracia of the PSOE explained that the town hall is “happy to work with the Councillor for the Coast, Bob Houliston and Platforma, in the spirit of integration, so that everybody can feel part of the municipality”.

Meanwhile, Bob Houliston said that he himself is “very impressed with everybody´s efforts and the strength of the civic bond that has been shown by the residents of the coast, even in these difficult financial times”.

The Multicolor Parade will have around 13 carnival floats from around the entire area, encompassing those from the likes of Torrevieja, and will start from calle Nícolas de Bussí at 6pm and make its way to the Playa Flamenca Mercadona car park, where a huge tent will be waiting, complete with stage, bar and snacks, and crammed full of entertainers for young and old.

There will be prizes for the best float, the best dance, the best costume and a presentation to the highly skilled designer who created the poster advertising the event, although adding it to her design portfolio is probably the last thing on the mind of 7 year old Alisa Kasakova, a child of a Russian family who attends Los Dolces school.

With the weather set to be fine, temperatures predicted to rocket, there is no question that the Orihuela Costa will be the hottest place to be this weekend, whether you take a trip to the beach, or support this festival in only its second year and enjoy the fruits and colour that carnival brings, under the multicultural banner of Multicolor.

TO IMPROVE THE MAN

Can man improve economic and political systems, ideologies, or the mere passage of time?

You can not improve the human race in general, but an individual it can try. We can only work every day in the good of all, striving to be a little better each of us, helping those around us to do the same. Economic or political systems do not improve the man, only love lifts us up on our misery.

Not even expect this or that if successful ideology spread throughout the world as a panacea, the solution to all ills that are causing the people. Theoretically it could work, but not to be implemented would not effect. And that in the event that such ideology was wonderful, focusing on the real causes of the ills afflicting our society, as is the case of the Social Doctrine of the Church, but it is not carried out. There's that monumental instrument for those who have the courage to apply it.

It's a great service to humanity, a monumental contribution of the Catholic Church than any person of good will, whether or not Christian could subscribe if they knew.

I do not believe in improving thanks to the progress of man and of civilization, or the mere passage of time. The man is always the same; nature does not change, as demonstrated by its long history. To the extent, or at least empathize relates, with other human beings, learn from them, teach, strive to acquire virtues and eradicate vices ... to that extent his life is fuller, more happy and helping others. These are not theories, can be seen in practice, and any of us has personal experience or at least seen it in others, celebrities or neighbors, acquaintances, friends.

Being hand over hand and complaining will not eliminate the evils of society and solve our personal problems, not merely being informed. It is necessary to contribute new ideas and reject those that do not work, fulfill our obligations when we demand rights, and complain less and become more involved in improving our society.

FANCY A COFFEE WITH AFA?

Due to popular demand AFA Alzheimer's Torrevieja will holding a coffee and cake morning at their day centre on the last Saturday of every month. The home made cake stall at their previous events and fairs has always been well attended and raised a generous amount of money for the charity.

The other stall which is mostly requested is the knitting one. This gives browsers an opportunity to stock up on very reasonable gifts, with hand knitted cardigans, jumpers and other items ranging from baby wear to adult sizes.

Together the coffee, cake and knitting morning should provide an opportunity to relax, chat with AFA volunteers and solve a present challenge.

Judy Ferris, AFA Treasurer and fundraiser said “Everyone is welcome to come along and have a coffee and help us at the same time. In this current climate funds are limited but our desire to socialise and help doesn't stop. We really hope that as many people as possible will come along and help us. All contributions to the coffee mornings are welcome.”

The coffee morning will start this Saturday 25th February, 10.30am-12.30, at the AFA Day Centre in Prolongacion Avenida de La Estacion 1, in Torrevieja.

We look forward to seeing you!

AFA Alzheimer's Association Torrevieja is available for advice and support. We rely on voluntary donations to continue our vital work in our day centre and now have a “Buy a Brick” campaign to raise money to build a much needed residential care home for sufferers. TORREVIEJA STROKE SUPPORT GROUP

TORREVIEJA STROKE SUPPORT GROUP

TSSG - Respite Coach Outing. In near freezing temperatures and dark clouds on Saturday last, 18 members of the TSSG set off on a respite tour of the spring almond blossom in the Jalon valley.

Beyond Benidorm amidst mountain scenery the sun shone through and the first views of the pink and while blossom. A welcome stop in Jalon Village for coffee and a look round the colourful market was enjoyed. Moving on down the valley more blossom was evident, but also because of the colder springtime this year it was clear much blossom was late though still lovely and the scenery green and magestic.

Lunch was arranged in the Co-operativa Agricola in Parcent which had a village hall attmosphere and home made country food. A few members went further with driver Gareth for a picnic in the coach on the top of the Coll de Rates with stupendous views. It was a most enjoyable change and respite day for all.

TSSG thank Sheila and Alan of HELP in Jalon for providing local knowledge and welcome and Gareth driver of hts mini coaches for his cheerful management of wheel chair loading and understanding assistance.
