Bubba Watson’s new golf buggy.
AT THE LAUNCH of his prototype BW1 Bubba commented: “Golf carts have been the same for years. This baby goes in and outta the woods, and my ball likes to go into the woods so it’s ideal for me. It can float over the water hazard and come up right by the green, and it cruises 9” above the grass so it leaves no marks. Golf should be fun, I got started driving a golf cart for fun, then golf kinda got in the way.”
That’s one way of describing teaching himself to play and winning the 2012 Masters. Watson/Oakley have 160 Bubba Hovers currently in production, and if you would like one they retail at around 40,000 dollars.
THE “WIZARD OF OZ” Adam Scott, won the Masters with Titleist gear, a fact that Rory McIlroy will probably have noticed. Purists who comment on that putter should ask themselves if anchored putters give Scott, Els & Co. Such huge advantages, why don’t other Tour players use them?
They don’t give a huge advantage. Putting requires untold hours of practice plus a great deal of inborn talent, which can desert players at any time, as Justin Rose will testify.
Adam, on why he asked caddie Steve Williams to read his last putt on the 18th: “It was really dark. He’s seen a lot of putts here. He made an unbelievable read.” Tiger Wood’s mood won’t have been improved if he was watching. Steve Williams helped him to win 13 majors including three Masters before Tiger fired him.
At the retiring champion dinner the week before the Masters the defending champion gets to choose the menu. Tiger Woods had cheeseburgers, Vijay Singh chose curry. Next year it has to be prawns on a barbie.
FOLLOWING THE LAUNCH of their X Hot and X Hot Pro irons, Callaway have unveiled their X Hot driver featuring the new Speed Frame Face technology. Callaway engineers designed the club utilising the brand’s thinnest casting technology in history, which helps players with average swing speeds to generate more clubhead speed for greater distance.
Adjustability has also been factored in to the new X Hot driver, with golfers given the opportunity to alter the face angle to an open, closed or neutral setting.
GOLF CLUB RENTAL companies are reporting a major boost as bookings by British and Irish golfers have risen considerably this year. As U.K. temperatures plunged as low as minus 15C in February and average sunshine was nearly 20% down, last minute bookings to Spain increased significantly, and golfers obviously preferred to hire rather than pay the inflated charges of the no frills airlines.
Add the fact that they could find themselves playing with a nearly new set of Titleist or Taylor Made clubs for very competitive prices and it is, as they say, a no brainer.
The BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, from May 21st to the 26th, promises a “superb week of fun, celebrity spotting and world class golf,” and should see Europe’s Ryder Cup team reassemble competitively for the first time on British soil since the Ryder Cup. For the first time the official practice day on the Tuesday will be open to the public.
The Celebrity Pro Am follows on the Wednesday, with the Championship commencing on the Thursday. Luke Donald is seeking to defend the title he won a year ago. A record prize fund of €4.75million will be at stake in the European Tour’s flagship event, and the 2013 champion will receive €791,660, which is over €40,000 more than Luke Donald collected.
THE FAMOUS (or infamous if you are from the U.S.) cop car in which Rory McIlroy was rushed to the course at the Ryder Cup with only minutes to spare is for sale on ebay in America for $3,250. Bubba Watson or Jason Dufner will probably buy it and run it over a cliff.
