SAN MIGUEL BOWLS CLUB by Janet Thomas

On Tuesday 3rd September the annual Challenge match played between the “Girls Aloud Team” of Emerald Isle and San Miguel’s Ladies for the “Marks Ladies Only” trophy which is now in it’s 5th year took place.

This year the match was at the Emerald Isle with the format being 6 triples. After a slow start by some of the teams San Miguel managed to pull away on three of the rinks.

Unfortunately Carol skipping one of the rinks felt unwell and it was suggested that we change playing positions, however this didn’t work and following further consultations with the players Sabrina opted to concede the rink giving the first 2 points the Isle.

The remaining rinks skipped by Jo, Mary, Annie and Sabrina gave San Miguel enough points to retain the Trophy for the 4th consecutive year. A massive “THANK YOU” to all the supporters from both teams, and to Emerald Isle for hosting this years event.
We are already looking forward to next years match at San Miguel.

Our Two Wood Triples mini-league, which commenced on 31st July, culminated on Wednesday in a great final. Two groups, of five teams each, played to win their respective group and then battle it out against each other.

Bill Moseley, Noel Davis and Tony Sansom took on Jan Allen, Cliff Plaisted and Cyril Medley. Both teams played some excellent bowls, with Cyril’s team winning by a margin of five shots.

All finalists received a voucher for The Bowls Shop, many thanks to Pat Davis for her co-operation and generosity. Congratulations must go to Noel Davis, who did an excellent job in running the competition and to Alan Campbell for his hard work behind the scenes. Grateful thanks to the many spectators who turned up to offer their support to the finalists.

SABA LEAGUE Christians played away to Country Bowls Total points for 3 Points against 11, 2 more games to go hopefully we will stay up. Moors played at home to Greenland’s Glosters Good home result for the Moors winning 12pts – 2 pts. Some very hard fought games, well done to all concerned.

San Miguel proudly hosted the federated “Presidents Cup” on the 15th 16th and 17th June. 23 teams competed in 4 groups hoping to win a semi/final place. After some superb bowling by all teams each group produced a semi finalist.

The Vistabella team represented by Gail Watson, Ian Kenyon and Fred Willshire were drawn to play the El Rancho team of Jane and Stuart Hamill and Drew Gerrard in the first semi with Fred’s team booking a final place. The second semi pitted the San Luis trio of Pam and Mike Lockett and Les Bedford playing the team from Finca Guila namely Barbara and Len Pilling and Les Wilson with San Luis booking the other final spot. Spectators were treated to some brilliant draw bowling in the final, Vistabella started slowly and needed to pull out all the stops to forge ahead in the latter stages to win with an end to spare well done to both teams.

Sabrina with her little band of helpers voiced her thanks to all concerned in the organisation of the matches, scoring and umpiring and handed the presentation of trophies over to the President of the Federation Bob Donnelly who congratulated all the winners and finalists and brought proceedings to a close.
